After a local Post Office burglary, four suspects were being interviewed. Below is a summary of their statements. Police know that each of them told the truth in one of the statements and lied in the other. From this information can you tell who committed the crime?

I think it has to be Brian. From Alan's statements it has to be either Derek or Brian (one statement is a lie). Derek said it was Charles which then has to be a lie, so the "It wasn't Alan" is the truth. Charles said It was Alan which we now know is a lie, so It wasn't Derek is the truth. That leaves Brian.

Or I don't understand and just got it wrong.

Sorry, but way too easy. You know it's Brian or Derek from Alan's responses. So, Brian's statement that it wasn't Charles is true, making the other statement - It was Derek - false. Ergo, if it wasn't Derek, it was Brian. Nice try though!
