While there is natural variation in the colour of ****, there are some colours which are medical red flags, and indicate that something serious could be afoot.

Reddish stool could be a sign of stool mixed with blood, which may indicate bleeding from the large intestines.

Jet black stool, especially if accompanied by a sickly sweet smell, is known as maelena, and is an indication of bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract, especially from the stomach. The black colour comes from blood that has been altered during transit in the intestinal tract.

Light yellow stool, especially if it floats, is known as steatorrhea, and is often the result of removal of the gallbladder, and other conditions in which fat absorption is compromised. The light yellow colour comes from unabsorbed fat, and there stool is often described as being much more foul smelling than normal.

It is possible that the alteration in the colour of your stool is related to malabsorption following your gastric bypass surgery. Without knowing the details of your surgery, this cannot be determined with certainty.

One thing you might want to consider is to collect a sample of your stool to show your surgeon at your next consult.

Have you been taking iron supplements or drinking a blackberry drink like Ribena?

If it is worrying you ask your doctor. You have every right to worry about your health.

I am sure he will take your question seriously. If he doesn't , change doctors.
