Because only complete morons would come up with such tales ... don't know how you would describe those that listen to them.

Buddhism doesn't even have a God... nor did Christianity start with a religion with some guy being told by God to tell some people about God... I think you read some parts of the Bible (most likely sparsely, story of Moses, perhaps?) -- or you limited yourself to Qu'ran... by the way, the Muslims might get you by calling their prophet Muhammad a "moron."

Actually, most of the morons who started religions really did not have God visits, but what they call Angelic visits. I took a course on this. The Bible says that satan appears as an angel of light. I think the person(s) have to be suseptible to it, usually arrogance and going beyond what the Bible says.
Mormon Church, Joseph Smith,
On a spring day in 1820 14-year-old Joseph Smith sought solitude in a grove of trees and prayed to know which church was true. God the Father and Jesus Christ, "two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description," appeared and spoke with him.1
Wondering which of the many churches to join, Joseph had followed the counsel in the Bible's book of James: "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God." The Lord told Joseph "that all the religious denominations were believing in incorrect doctrines" and that he was to await further instructions from on high.2 "In a state of calmness and peace indescribable," Joseph left that sacred grove knowing the reality of our Father in Heaven and His resurrected Son, Jesus Christ.3
Joseph Smith's first vision stands today as the greatest event in world history since the birth, ministry, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. After centuries of darkness, the Lord opened the heavens to reveal His word and restore His Church through His chosen prophet
Mohommad
Muhammad had a reflective turn of mind and routinely spent nights in a cave (Hira) near Mecca in meditation and thought. Muslims believe that around the year 610, while meditating, Muhammad was visited by the Angel Gabriel.
Get my point? The question should be how is it that people just follow them.
Buddah, Nevertheless, at the age of 29, he came across what has become known as the Four Passing Sights: an old crippled man, a sick man, a decaying corpse, and finally a wandering holy man. These four sights led him to the realization that birth, old age, sickness and death come to everyone. He decided to abandon his worldly life, leaving behind his privileges, rank, caste, and his wife and child, to take up the life of a wandering holy man in search of the answer to the problems of birth, old age, pain, sickness, and death.

Those whom the "world" say's are "Winners" are too proud and as the Lord says in the Old testament. "Stiff necked" Meaning Stubborn. God chooses the weak and makes them strong, He chooses the Humble and blesses them.
Psa 40:4 Blessed [is] that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Psa 119:21 Thou hast rebuked the proud [that are] cursed, which do err from thy commandments.
Psa 119:78 Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: [but] I will meditate in thy precepts.
Psa 138:6 Though the LORD [be] high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.
Pro 15:25 The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.
Pro 16:19 Better [it is to be] of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
Ecc 7:8 Better [is] the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: [and] the patient in spirit [is] better than the proud in spirit.
Isa 13:11 And I will punish the world for [their] evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
Luk 1:51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
Jam 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

I would not call a 'prophet' a moron if I were you..
By your words you will be judged..
Once, some children were making fun of a prophet of Jehovah, and God sent she bears to kill these children. When you torment a prophet, you are tormenting God himself. 2Kings 2:23-25.
Do you want to meet a grizzly bear? It is not to late to repent.
It is true that God chooses common laborers for his assignments.
Amos 7:14 Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah; I was not a prophet, neither was I the son of a prophet; but I was a herdsman and a nipper of figs of sycamore trees. And Jehovah proceeded to take me from following the flock, and Jehovah went on to say to me, "Go prophesy to my people Israel."

To let people know God's glory and power. Imagine a complete moron becoming instant learned man. Take the disciple of christ they were fishermen, ordinary people, yet their knowledge of who God is comparable even better than the Pharisees and Sadduces at the time
