From what I understand is that he will not be charged for a hatecrime. But what if the roles were reversed? would it be a hatecrime then?

I am not so concerned about this being a hate crime but what I am concerned about is the lack of disregard for human life....I can not believe that he wouldn't care about hitting 3 beautiful children and just driving off like that....I do know what you mean though about it being a white man in the car and hitting a black family...the entire world would have heard this story and everyone would be forced to hate the man...but since its not the case and he is black and the family is white we are all to forgive and forget...its sad really it shouldn't matter what color you are if you do a horrible crime you should pay the consequences

I don't think this was a hate crime. I think no matter if that family was there or another he would have done the same thing. it could only be considered a hate if he had said hey whitey i hate all white people and im gonna run down every white person i see kids and all he was just sick psycho who needs to rot away and never see the light of day cause if freed he will do it again

I don't see a hate crime I just see a crime. If that was my wife and kids this guy wouldn't make it to jail.
Edit: Was the driver black is that why you're saying hate crime? If so then yes, if the roles were reversed it would be called a hate crime.

I didn't have to sign up for anything to read it.
Anyhow, I don't think it should be a hate crime, because there must be reason to show that there was some kind of prejudice involved, such as him admitting that he wanted to mow over some Hispanics.
Hate crimes are crimes against an individual because of protected status(race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc) and not because of the individual themselves.

Murder is a hate crime by the sheer fact for someone to be murdered there has to be enough hate to actually kill someone. Doesn't matter about a person's hide, religion, or shoes.
Now these things may contribute to hate, but there should be no hate crime legislation (adding extra penalties just because someone thought about it because of race, religion, sexual orientation) because we are supposed to be able to think what we want, no matter how despicable it maybe.

Oh my God! That's horrible! I think it's a hate crime, for sure! "depression" my ***! I get depressed, but I've never considered running down a family! Sheesh!
There's no justice for white people in this circumstance. I'm reminded of an incident that happened near me where a group of black men ran over a young white man and beat him as he lay underneath the car. They weren't charged with a hate crime either, though witnesses heard them yelling, "Kill Whitey!" as they beat him.
I am encouraged by the bystanders in this story who rushed to help and by the police officers who went out of their way to bring a dying child her favorite toy.

I guess I am missing what makes it a hate crime? Sounds to me like the dude was batsh*t crazy but not a racist.

It could be a hate crime.
Or he may have just decided he wanted to kill the next person he came across, I don't know about you, but I don't really want to go into the mind of a killer, do you???
I did hear about this attack in the news and thought it was truly terrible.

"hate crime" is a socialist concoction. It was a crime, adding the word hate to it does not make it any worse.
The phrase should be removed from law and history.
Redundant laws and penalties do not prevent crime they just make stupid socialist lawmakers look better to stupid voters.

It sounds like a mafia hit to me. My grandmother's sister married someone in the mob, and that's how they killed her. They kept running her over until she was dead. Their color/race has nothing to do with it. Money, loss of love, or fear of someone "spilling the beans" is a more likely reason.
