I couldn't believe that moron from South Carolina. "All indicators show that education in SC is doing great!". What about being dead last in SAT scores? "Oh, that's not a good indicator."

W THF????

Or the Unions in NY?! That is a COMPLETLY jacked up school system.

I WANT SCHOOL CHOICE AND I WANT IT NOW!!!!!!

What was the crazy ***** in Florida saying? There's no proof that school vouchers work? and it may topple the system? WTF was she smoking? Just look at Belgium, it's OBVIOUSLY working!!!

This isn't effing rocket science. Our school system is broke. We do not have to reinvent the wheel to fix to it, we only have to look at other models that work, and copy them!!

It shows how bad the American education system is, maybe not as bad as the President! If the kids imitate the way he speaks whenever he appears on TV, then you know how stupid in 'speaking' our next generation will be!

Of course, there is no doubt that the American education system is overdue for reforms as kids today are over-exposed to multi-media from which they get information far more than what they can from their teachers in classrooms, but mostly unguided!

At the end of the day however, the basic literary and number skills of the kids in schools leave much to be desired!

For instance, looking at the way some of the questions are worded on 'Yahoo answers' one is wonder-struck by the skills of these people who are supposed to have already gone through the basic education provided in the country, And, answers to some maths questions (though sound trivial) leave even much more to be desired!!

No wonder, in some national and international contests such as spelling contests, maths contests and so on, kids from other parts of the world excel! And, some of the top students in the US Colleges and Universities are from other countries too (though the number of students from other countries has started to decline, thanks to the stringent security measures, however inevitable they may be, introduced after 9-11)! At this rate, in 20 years or so, the quality of students coming out of the American institutions of higher learning will leave a lot lot more to be desired!!!

As for the concern of some of declining 'super power' status of America, well, these kids will of course be well-equipped how to hold and use guns as the culture itself is being transformed into what we may call 'gun culture'! And, after all, it should help and match with what the president keeps saying that the fight against terrorism will have to continue maybe in the entire 21st Century or forever! So, are the schools, colleges and universities going to produce counter-terrorists so that U.S. can continue with its plans for exporting terrorism to other countries?

I'm not a parent, but I tutored full-time for almost six years. I think that there were some good points, but the main problem is that kids are getting too much anti-education propaganda from their peers and entertainment. If parents and tv and musicians and everyone who influences children would go back to insisting on civilized behavior and literacy, they might raise thinking humans again. The rest of the problem is the lack of male role models. It's been several generations since families began deteriorating. (And that's men's fault for skipping out, not women's for working.) Kids would listen more if they had males to discipline them. And by the way, I was a Psychology major at UCLA.

Its a sign of the times that other nations will pass us in all phases of economic superiority. The EU, Russia, and China WILL be the major players in everything from the economy, education, and jobs to economic resources within the next 10 years. If you dont believe me compare our economy from 40 years ago to now. Back then our education, natural resources, technology were superior on all levels. Yet a slow decline has occurred, and right now our grip on the title "Worlds only superpower" is being slowly devoured by the EU, Russia, and China. And further proof can be found in Revelation ch 9 and 16-18.

I am a student, a college graduate who is going to med school soon. i couldnt believe it. Someday these students, who are getting a raw deal btw, are going to be the techs and lab assistants who perform tests to give me numbers that i have to rely on, that you have to rely on. WE ARE ALL SCREWED by this situation. someday i hope i am in a position to better it. until then i pray.

Y!A makes the situation worse or is proof of the problem. students ask very for answers, not solutions, to very simple problems. we give them the answer they pass and become those techs ive been talking about.

the above two responces are just proof of how bad our educational system is. one of two things they didnt see it and still felt like responding or couldnt form a coherent thought.
