I just got a Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper out of a vending machine. I haven't opened it yet (and most likely won't open it) but I noticed the expiration date on it is July 24, 2006. Seeing as it is September 2, 2006...would this be safe to drink? What (if anything) would happen to me if I drank it?

As far as I've heard it should be fine....
Those dates are generally required to be put on all products. I have drank several sodas past there date... If anything, they just sometimes loose their fizz.

It's probably safe, since it's packed aseptically, but quality may decline. May products will safe "best if used by" and give a date. This means they are not expected to be spoiled by won't taste as good.

It's especially important with diet soft drinks, since some artificial sweeteners become less and less sweet with time and eventually some diet drinks will taste unsweetened.

Sodas in plastic bottles might be more of an issue because some concerns exist about chemicals leaching out of the plastic into the soda.

I think it's quite safe to drink a carbonated beverage past it's
expiration date, because there is no toxic reaction whatsoever
in the drink that will kill you. The only thing which may happen
to the drink is its flat and stale taste, due to the loss of CO2 in
the drink. Besides, most beverage or soft drink manufacturers
prepare their expiry dates longer by about 6 months even-
though it is stated expired in the beverage drink itself. Don't you
worry, drink up!

I didn't even know carbonated beverages HAD expiration dates! It is my impression they are among the most stable of canned products. I wouldn't worry about the expiration date.

Anything that is past its expiration date ---- is kinda scary to consume, if accidentally eaten- wish you luck! but then again it depends, as before, I accidentally ate an expired chocolate and nothing happened to me while another friend of mine who ate the same stuff started vomitting and had an LBM (Loose Bowel Movement) 5 hours after.....-yunesa@yahoo.com

It's still good. That is just a freshness indicator for pop and it might not taste as good after that date. The pop might become more flat over time.

It's merely a freshness thing. Diet soda should be kept in a cool place for no more than a year. The flavor simply will die.
