Boot camp style prisons exist and are already being used as an alternative to prison. However, they only work if the convict is actually trying to reform.

Not all drug offenders are addicts, a large part of the problem is a social issue and in no way a criminal issue. Boot camp builds esteem, discipline, focus, etc. If someone has all that and is smoking pot, why send them to jail? You're not addressing the problem.

There is no be-all-end-all panacea to crime. By the way, that part of the legal system is considered Punishment, not Law Enforcement. Law enforcement is the cops on the street.

I am sure your plan has a long way to go but I have to say that I agree.

Many offenders in this country, especially young offenders, have not been "brought up". They know no different - their parents were lazy, useless, drinking, drug takers etc. etc. and these young people have learnt NOTHING. They do not know HOW to function within society.

Yes, I think boot camps or similar would be good. They need to be educated and learn to live peacefully with others. They need to learn how to look after themselves - and others. They need to learn self-respect and respect for others. They need to learn to go out into the world and take their place in society as a law abiding citizen. And to work for the things they want in life.

Just banging someone up in a prison with no effort at rehabilitation is a waste of time and tax payers money.

are you serious? Just because you graduate boot camp doesn't qualify you as an outstanding citizen. I have lived in Fort Hood Texas for 13 years and thecrimes that soldiers commit are just as bad if not worse than civilian crimes. There was a case where 2 GI's abducted a girl and raped and killed her and left her in the woods. I mean you cant say that molesters should just go to boot camp and Pof they are great guys/girls after wards. Those kinds of people are sick and they need to be treated as so. Don't put tehm in the midst of society and let them be free just cause they went through boot camp. Lock the MF's up with serial homosexual rapists and let them see how it feels.

Boot Camp style prisons are a great idea in my book. The return rate is significantly lower than the regular prison. Point, the person does need to want to reform, however, that style does teach discipline and there are fewer problems with prisoners in that type of environment.

I think enough has been said by others about your plan and whilst I agree with some (maybe a lot) of the points raised, I think you should be commended for at least trying to think around some of the problems.
My point to you to give you even further food for thought is this - why do you think that greedy or psycho (by which I assume you mean mentally ill and people with learning difficulties?) are un -reformable (your words)? Seems a huge cop out. Also seems to be your opinion that people with medical and mental problems deserve less help than those with addictions.

Well, your solution was tried out by William Whitelaw during the 70's and you know what, what you ended up with was well trained thugs. It didn't work then and it never will. Fascism is for those with no compassion or imagination. Addiction is not cured by bullying and violence any more than I could knock sense into you. I know this. I used to take cricket bats to fascists and did they change their mind? No, they just became more desperate fascists. Nobody ever changed their mind through violence. If that worked "The Jews would have learnt their lesson." Grow up.
"Happy White Boy" says it all. I bet you are not happy at all but very angry, and you will remain so, especially as people like you make me want to take up my AFA insignia again, not to teach a lesson, which you will never learn, but just for the fun of smashing some fascist, white trash, ignorant rabble rousing scum. And I'm a white man.
People like you who are poor white trash, are why you are poor white trash. But I bet you love your mum.

I do not believe all of the crimes you listed are equal. Sex offenders should be imprisoned. I think your idea has merit for petty criminals. The military does teach self discipline and a setting like that could give a second chance to people who have the potential to be reformed. Teaching job skills, also a good idea. Tnmack is right about funding. That would be the largest hurdle.

Hey-

A lot of offenders are sent to "Teen Challenge" programs in which they are required to hug each other and spout christianity. These programs are for felons aged to their late twenties. They are very popular as an alternative to prison or boot camp. You sound like someone who would appreciate this type of thing...

I'm with you on number 1. Although I reckon sex offenders should have their sexual organs/hands (which ever was the offending part of their body they used in the offence) chopped off, and a life sentence, should be for life.

Anything is better than the system we have now, personally, I would put them in the 'REAL' armed forces, I am sure 2 years would see them turned out as better people.
