It's a natural response, kittens do the same things with their mothers, especially after feeding. He feels secure and cared for, hence the purring and kneading.

Because kittens knead their mothers to cause lactation, and then purr because they are happy (I hope - cats can also purr when in pain or scared) -
My girl-cat kneads and purrs all the time - she just walks up to a blanket and starts purring and kneading it. I think it's fun.

The answer to this question is simple. cats, especially kitten do this to people, and things when they feel comfortable and happy. thus, when they do it to a person, it shows that they feel comfortable, happy and secure with that person, which is a good sign, testifying to the fact that a special bond has been formed between you and your cat,
The reason they do this is completely different. they begin doing this when they are young kittens. when they nurse off their mother, they knead the stomach of their mother to stimulate and increase milk production while feeding.

Each cat is different. You cat loves you and that is why he does it. Also it is from what they know when they are young with there moms. Watch a little kitten with its mom and you will see. You cat thinks of you as its provider and protector

It's kind of a way for them to mark their territory.
