How about a gift certicate to a spa? The first few weeks with a new baby is tough and I'm sure the mom would appreciate some pampering for herself.

I recently heard of a gift being given to a new mom that allows her to catalogue her new-baby moments with ease. Scrapbooking is a huge industry and very fashionable right now, but many women (especially new moms!) are too busy or tired to actually take the time to create a scrapbook for their little one. The great thing is, everyone loves to look through scrapbooks and new moms especially want to memorize every little thing that new bundle does.
Well, what about giving her a scrapbook? You can get pre-made scrapbooks where you just add pictures, or you can give her a gift certificate for a custom scrapbook (she sends the pictures and a professional puts it together). Either would make a great gift for a busy new mom!

If the new mom is going to nurse, I have two suggestions.
A pretty lightweight poncho (not see-through) would make a nice gift. I had one of these when my youngest was a baby and loved it. It was so much better than draping a receiving blanket over my shoulder when I had to nurse somewhere in public.
They're fashionable, the baby can't pull them off, they cover all sides, and they look great no matter how your size may have changed during the pregnancy.
Another great gift for a nursing mom would be a small decorative box (should be about 5X5" wide--or close to that) that they could keep nursing pads in (I was always looking for a discrete place to keep these in your home). Of course, you could put something like bath salts or tea or something along that line in it (some soothing treat) when you give it to the new mom.
Another thing someone gave me when I had my first child, which I really appreciated, was a plate of dried fruit. It was nice to have something healthy to snack on that I didn't have to take time to prepare.

the mom actually benefits from the gifts for the newborn...for a new mom a good gift would be a month(or so) membership at a gym

I am a new mom and I love to get bath stuff. Either that or just help her out around the house. You know, cook her a small dinner or wash the dishes. Depending on the type of the woman they really don't want anything but time and help.

flowers or chocolates are always great, something very special to share or keep just for herself,
new mums are very protective of the little ones , and also can be very emotional, so probably not a good idea to offer to take baby while she has a rest, she may not see it as you do,
also the house can be a bit of a mess with all the extra to so, but in the same way she may take the offer of home help as questioning her ability to cope, she may be questioning her own ability to cope, so stick with the flowers chocs or the bath gels and talc's, some thing special for her to enjoy in those precious spare moments when baby is sleeping.

night gowns are nice, if breast feeding, get the ones with openings, makes things alot easier.
also, day off certificate. You volunteer to keep the baby one day, so she can rest, or shop or pamper herself, or even go out with hubby.
having a new baby takes a toll on mom & the relationship with dad.
house cleaning gift certificates
Anything that would make a mom's day easier

Something fun for her! Maybe a gift certificate to a day spa or a made by you gift cert where you'll give her a day off from her kid when she'd like.
For cute gifts you can wrap, I recommend www.breezybeachwear.com or www.georgietees.com
