I saw a movie once about an elephant man. I wonder if that can be. There is a lady I see from time to time that has a very large foot and also some kind of a large lump on her forehead ( she wears scarves so it's there but we do not see it. I think it is some kind of disease, wouldn't it be ?

Yes, the elephant man was a real person. He, and other like him, suffer from elephantiasis. The disease is caused by a problem with the lymphatic system.

it is caused by a parasite infestation called Wucheria Bancrofti. it is transmitted via a vector - mosquitoes in the tropical areas.

the clinical symptoms are that the worm blocks the lymph flow in the body. this causes the abnormal drainage of lymph to the nodes and oedema occurs. it is usually in the leg and scrotum. i saw a picture of a guy whose scrotum was so big due to the oedema, that when he stood in an upright position, the scrotum rested on the ground.

one cannot get rid of the adult worm, only of the larvae with meds, thats why it is a feared type of infestation and thats why they have these large limbs.

there are only prevention - tabbard and peaceful sleep.

Yes it is a real disease. It is genetic. My neurosurgeon thinks that I may have it. There is no cure but mine is not bad. It is basically fatty tumors that come up on your body. I have some on my legs and one on my shoulder. But they are not noticeable. I would have to point them out to you. Hope this answers your questions.
