How many times have you heard or read that man is destroying the earth? How egotistical is that!
Man is not capable of destroying the earth - the earth could care less if man were to vanish tomorrow! It would still mosey around the sun every 365 days or so and all of natures physical laws would still be intact.
However, what man can destroy is the earth's ability to provide an environment that sustains life. It is this unique combination of atmosphere, temperature, fresh water and so on that we can indeed destroy. And this is where the ecologist comes in.
Ecology is the constant monitoring and study of our environment and the effects of a ballooning population, industrialization, natural resource utilization, and the effects that all of the other human factors have on the earth's ability to sustain life.
That's kind of important, wouldn't you agree?

An ecologist is someone who studies how living things interact. Not to be confused with an environmentalist who is someone who smokes weed and preaches the end of the world.
