1. That depends on much you plan on putting in the backpack
2. If you can handle the physical aspects of it and are in good shape, go for it.
3. When living in Oaxaca, Mexico for two months a couple of years ago, we saw quite a few adults backpacking. Usually a husband and wife team.
4. There were about four hostels within a three block area (about 1 KM.)

but why would you want to go into a hostel when a delightful bed and breakfast would be so much nicer.
you will need the comfort of a nice bed, a private bath and a good meal. let the younger people stay in the hostel and have wild fun and excitement. get a good night sleep someplace CLEAN

no, not at all. But maybe you should be aware which hostel you choose. There are 'party' hostels and 'quiet' hostels. Depends what you prefer and what kind of person you are.
