Hi Wayne,
There were a couple of reasons Jesus came (Yeshua meaning god with us... Jesus, then being God manifested in the Flesh)
Understand first that Hell was designed for those who transgressed God's laws... and initially that only meant Lucifer and the angels who followed him as he led a mutiny against God. Of course... rules are rules... and so anyone who breaks the law has to be punished. But in that we inherenly understand that God didn't intend for humans to have to go to hell... it's just the result of sin... and sin is part of who we are.
So if sin is part of who we are... and everyone who sins goes to hell... we are all, by default, awarded a one-way ticket to the lake of fire.... but remember, God didn't WANT that to happen... but SOMEONE had to die for the sins being committed... but in order to cover everyone, it had to be someone who never sinned... someone who is able to overcome their human nature... we can't do it... and so God manifested himself in the flesh in the person of Jesus in order to do that for us....
But (and just as importantly) have you ever heard someone who's been caught doing something wrong rebut with "you just don't understand how it is, I couldn't help it... I had to do it..." well... with Jesus coming in the flesh... encountering the same problems we do... enduring the same types of temptations we do... having the same feelings as we do... living life as one of us... he can easily respond to people's rebuttals with "yes... I do understand... I understand what it's like to be hungry... to be thirsty... to be angry... to be sad... to lose of loved one... to be tempted by beautiful women.... to be tempted to abuse alcohol... to be betrayed by friends... to be shunned by loved ones..." Yeah... Jesus came to save us... but he also came to understand what we go through....
Gotta admire someone who would love you so much he would go through all that for you, don't ya????

I have heard it explained this way. God manifested in the flesh so that he could know what man was going through so he could know how difficult it is to live this life. Also, so that he could set am example for man to follow. And finally, to provide a way for man to be reconsiled with God, there was no sacrifice on earth sufficient to cover all of mans sins, so God provided his own sacrifice, a perfect sacrifice which would cover all sins.

Want me to quote the bible?
9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death - that is, the devil -
Check out the Nicene Creed for another reference (or just pick up the bible and read.) Jesus died for our sins, as the ultimate sacrifice.

Jesus was sent to earth by God( John 3:16) to redeem humans from sin and death that our first parents Adam and Eve brought upon all their descendents. He also preached about God's Kingdom and the blessings it will bring to the earth and all meek ones very shortly. Because he had his Fathers loving qualities, when others saw him, it was as if they were in God's presence. Of course no one has ever seen God at any time (No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us."1 John 4:12
And he said, Thou canst not see my face; for man shall not see me and live. Exodus 33:20)

I think there were several reasons like so people could see Him without dying, so He could make the perfect sacrifice etc... but one interesting reason that a lot of people overlook, is so He could live just like we do. Had He not come as a human, we could say "God doesnt know what pain feel's like, He never felt it" or "God has no idea what temptation is like" Or "God never suffered the loss of a loved one" this way, we know that He knows what WE feel like.

All but one are good answers.
Since our current idea of God is that He made every thing and is everthing . Then why sholuln't he/she have a body. Just look in a reflective surface and you will see a FACET of GOD staring back at you.

Jesus took the form of mortal flesh to die in it voluntarily so that all mortals with flesh go to a state of immortality.Jesus died in flesh means He killed sin of all to become Savior whose flesh can not be pierced with nails of sin.

Wayne S,
He had to become akin to man. That's why He came in the flesh in the form of a man.
