dude you don't need to fight, if your buddies start a fight just hang back or walk away. Your not a chicken or a coward for walking away. you may want to quit hanging out with em if they continue to start some BS. you don't have to prove anything to anyone.

But if you have to defend yourself, block or duck, anything to avoid someone's attack, and a good punch or knee strike to the groin (the family jewels) will usually give 'em something to think about the next time they wanna raise up on you. Or you could learn a martial art, and that'll help you out.

but fighting is not fun nor is it a sport, it's best that you tell em you don't have beef with nobody, but be ready and watch ur back if it comes down to it.

Honestly, if hanging out with these people is landing you in fights, you need to hang out with a new crowd. Fights like these don't come with a safety net--what good is training to be a better fighter when Smith & Wesson show up to the brawl? Fight long/often enough, and you WILL lose. If you're a mature man, you'll understand this and remove yourself from that environment.

The stronger and more advanced my techniques become, the less cause I have to use them. Confidence is its own defense--I don't need to prove myself to anyone anymore, despite the fact that I'll encounter relatively few non-pro fighters who could out-fight me.

That said, join your school's wrestling team. You'll learn a lot, get in excellent shape, and also line yourself up with a crowd that isn't often attacked. Learn to fight on the ground so that when the fight goes to the ground (they almost all do), you can finish it or get up and escape. For stand-up, learn kick-boxing or Muay Thai.

Again, learn not to fight and you're stronger than anyone.

Wake up every morning and do 100 pushups and situps. Hang from a bar and do leg lifts and pullups. You need to be able to have some power behind your punch.

Shadow box slipping, jabbing and moving. Also your strong hand punching and and elbow. Practice that everyday, and dont worry about being fancy and throwing kicks and take downs.

If you have friends, wrestle with them and learn to fight on the ground.

Look at any Pride fight champion, UFC champion or K-1, MMAs winningest style is the combination of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Muay Thai kick boxing. Your butt will be owned by anyone who trains in MMA Brazilian Jiujitsu/MuayThai.

Some kickboxing always helps. I like wrestling (elbows from mount). If you can, AVOID fighting in uncontrolled, unpredictable, dangerous settings.
