Why on Earth do you want the kid to pay for your mistake? You should have been paying attention to the road, and slowed down your car when you saw the kid and dog, knowing full well that dogs are unpredictable, and might dart out in front of your car. You say you ran over the collie, you would have to have been going mighty fast, or you're a moron. A car travelling 60mph takes around 100ft or so to stop. You must have been in a residential area, seeing as there was a kid walking a dog, and the maximum speed in residential areas is 25mph, which takes about 30-35ft to stop. You were careless, and ran over this poor kid's dog. And $1500 is a ridiculous amount for dog damage. I hit a wall going 40mph to dodge a guy running a red and destroyed my bumper and grill. I have a Lexus GS 430, and the repair cost was a little under $500 There is no way a dog could have ripped apart your car to the extent of $1500. Offer to buy the kid a new dog, and take some driving courses.

Contact YOUR insurance company and file a comprehensive insurance claim to repair your car. Leave the kid alone. You should feel lucky that the dog ran in front of your car and not the kid.
As for the poster that doubted $1500 from a dog, I can attest that it happens. In my case it was a large dog and I was on the interstate doing 70 MPH. At least the state trooper and I think it was a dog. I had bad dreams for a long time after that, as I love animals and felt responsible for that animal's demise.
For those of you that believe the parents liable for the acts of the child, this is not true in all states. In some states, parents have absolute responsibility for every bad act of their minor children. In some states, parents are responsible for the bad acts of their children when the parents are negligent in the supervision of the children. In other states, there is no parental liability for the acts of their children. In the states where parental liability exists, it is possible to obtain a judgment that holds the parents and the child “jointly and severably” liable.
I hope that helps you in deciding what is the RIGHT course of action.

Dude, that's just wrong. You got all these people thinking you're for real. There's no way a collie could do $1500 of damage to your car, even if you hit at 80 mph.

You are EVIL. You ran over some kids collie and now you want the KID to pay for your car damage. That poor kid doesn't have a dog anymore. Do you know how traumatizing it is for a kid to watch his dog die. You're a horrible person. Just thank god the kid's parents aren't pressing charges against you. Deal with the damage you did to your car. The kid has been through enough.

You obviously need contact the dogs parents and see if they had insurance. Also was this an 8 point collie or what? you must have been driving a YUGO for it to cause that much damage.

You go to small claims court and file a case a against him. If the kid is too young, then the parents will be responsible to pay. It's not your fault what happened, and you shouldn't have to pay for the damages.

If it is a kid, a minor, it is his parents that are libel. I am making an assumption that a traffic call was made. If not you will likely fix your car yourself. If his parents are homeowners, then they will have insurance. If not, you have two paths to travel:
A. - get an attorney
B. - small claims court
Even should you win you might have trouble collecting.

You can't sue the kid but you can go after his parents.
if it was me I'd fix the car myself and be done with it.But thinking about it the parents need a wake up call.If kid could'nt handle the dog he should'nt be walking it alone.

how old is the "kid"? was the dog on a leash? all of these questions have been asked on the court shows. if the "kid" is a minor, his parents are the ones to talk to. if the "kid" is an adult, he is responsible. sounds like its small claims court time. but you better have a police report to back you up.

Poor kid! He's been through enough already! You should pay for your own car to be fixed!
