You never want to get mushrooms wet they just become rubbery. When i clean mine i just take the advise of Racheal Ray and clean them with a damp towel and just wipe off the dirt. and yes you can eat the middle.

They should be fairly clean when you buy them. You will need to brush the tops off with a soft bristle brush "some stores sell them", Then I remove a piece from the bottom. Don't wash your mushrooms in water they absorb water. What your left with is edible. I do like mushrooms.

don't rinse with water. The real culinary way to clean off mushrooms is by using a mushroom brush to brush off the dirt. Rinsing with water can actually rinse the flavor right off your mushrooms. The brown part is edible.

I think you are from India. Though abroad one will not like to wash mushrooms, here you need to wash them well.
At times you find mushrooms with dark removable spots, those are manure. In that case, add a little flour to the mushrooms and some water (this makes a thin batter), Rub the mushrooms in the batter with both hands and wash off with clean water.

It doesn't hurt mushrooms to get them wet unless you soak for a while. The insides are fine to eat.
