If there are any Orthodox Jewish people out there who could answer, I would be interested in what they know.

i AM Jewish, hating when non-Jews answer for Jews and upset with what passes for 'knowing' here on Y!A.

The answer to your question is found in the Bible itself!

Genesis 4:3 And in process of time it came to
pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground
an offering unto the Etrnl. 4 And Abel, he also
brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat
thereof. And the Etrnl had respect unto Abel and to
his offering: 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he
had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his
countenance fell.

The text explicitly states that Abel brought of the FIRSTLINGS OF HIS FLOCK, which was the best he had. The firstlings are always considered the best. However, Cain merely brought what was at hand, what was easy.

So, when you go to a buffet, you take the best of what you see. Gd was no different, He chose the best over the mundane.....

God specifically asked for an animal to be brought; Abel did that; Cain disregarded that command and brought the fruits from his labor and it was then rejected by God. Check this out in Genesis 3 or 4. This is the first murder ever committed.

Genesis 4:3-7 Cain brought some fruits of the ground..Abel, he too brought some firstlings of his flock,,,Now while Jehovah was looking with favor upon Able and his offering, he did not look with any favor upon Cain and upon his offering. And Cain grew hot with great anger, and his countenance began fall.

At this Jehovah said to Cain; "Why are you hot with anger and why has your countenance fallen? If *YOU TURN to doing good,* will there not be an exhalation? But if you do not turn to doing good, there is sin crouching at the entrance, and for you is its craving; and will you, for your part, get the mastery over it?

So..apparently Cain was not doing good things before he offered the vegetables.

God is happy with our gifts if they come with righteousness.

Praise Jah!! you people!! Welcome earth's new King Christ Jesus!!

faith. It says later in the book of HEbrews that Abel offered it in faith. It is in illustration too. Abel offered sheep which is symbolic of a sacrifice thereby showing that He didnt trust in His own righteousness but instead the grace of God through Christ unlike other religions which say salvation is by good works. The fruit just represented Cains self righteousness and the bible say without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Some ask why blood why hell? These are good questions. THe reason is this the high holiness of God is not known if it were we would know the greatness of our sin. Jesus said if we hate we murder and if we look with lust we fornicated in our hearts. Now if we sinned 3 times a day for a year that is 1000 sins! It is good! that God offers grace through Jesus' death for our sins.

I'm not Jewish, but I think God saw what was in Abel's heart, and favored his offering. Cain's was not from the heart.

I have heard it explained this way. Abel offered the very best of his flock and he offered it with love, Cain did not offer the very best of his harvest and he offered it because he had to. I am not an Orthodox Jew, I am a protestant christian.

Abel gave the required blood sacrifice and Cain didn't.

Cain sacrificed fruit and vegetables.

Evidently God doesn't like brocolli either.

Able selected unblemished lambs to present to God, the best of the first-lings.

Cain kept the best for himself and gave God a bunch of grapes!
