I work in a center for children with disabilities, and we use signing for all of the children. While several of the teachers have taken formal classes on the subject, most of us have just picked it up from one another or looked up the info in one of the many comprehensive signing books we have around the school. That is awesome that you have been taking classes on signing and teaching it to your child... I did too. She is now 2 1/2, talking in 10-14 word sentences. As for rates... it would be great if you could do an inservice for the school's teachers. Maybe a little class for those who are interested in learning the sign and the values of signing in the evening or something. In that case, the school would pay you a flat rate for your time, say $50 for a one-to two-hour class. If they wanted you to go in the classroom and do a presentation (singing and signing with the kids), then it would be great if you could donate the time. Obviously, since it will take the children much longer and repeated exposure to the signing, the school is not going to want to keep shelling out money for you to come and sign with the kids all the time. It would probably be better (if you want to get paid for your time) to hold an inservice meeting for the staff, teach some simple, often-used signs (like, "more", "eat", "milk", "turn", etc), and provide a hand-out with pictures that the staff can use to familarize themselves with the signs. A great reference book is the Comprehensive Signed English Dictionary- it has great, easy to understand descriptions of the signs and pictures.

If they are interested in this, they probably would like for you to do it on a voluntary basis. You will only be showing or teaching them simple words to remember. The school would probably not be able to pay you in most cases, or maybe they could offer you a free week for your child if you come in and teach for a week or two.

Volunteering is great and rewarding, plus it shows self-lessness, which is what we should be teaching our children.

Find out first what they are willing to pay, so you don't price yourself out of a job. My grandson is autistic and is learning to sign because he can't speak. I wish you the best. He has the cookie sign down pat!

One one on this earth can pay the teacher their dues. Teacher are more than God on this earth. They only teach us and we can become somethink in our life. So there is no question arise what to get. You can ask according to your level of satisfaction. Because no body can pay the teacher their real value. they only guide us about the if and buts of life and we beocme something in life. Thre is no amount fixed in life.
