Echolalia was NOT caused by anything you have done as a parent. Echolalia is the repetition of phrases heard by a child, but may not have any specific meaning. They can be used by a child as a form of communication when they do not have the appropriate skills to initiate a conversation. It is most commonly associated with a pervasive developmental disorder or autism. Usually it happens when a parent or other caregiver asks the child a question and the child responds with the same question as an answer (Adult asks, "Do you want milk?" and child answers, "Do you want milk?"). You still don't know the answer to the question you've asked, but the child is understanding that some type of answer is expected- they just don't know what to answer with. Talk to your child's pediatrician and express your concerns. It would be very helpful to your doctor to have video of your child for the doctor to see how they are speaking in a familiar environment. (Kids never do what you say they do when you take them to see someone about it... just like your car never makes "that noise" when you take it to the mechanic.) Children who exhibit echolalia can improve over time and learn more effective communication with early intervention. Talk to your child's doctor about it. Good luck!

You couldn't have done anything to cause it but it is possible that she may have NLD or Asperger's Syndrome as this is a common effect of it. Most children with echolalia do improve over time.

Echolalia is the repetition or echoing of verbal utterances made by another person. You didn't do anything to cause this. She may have just been born with it..
