How does the match take away the smell? I don't get it.

The sulpher in the match helps minimize the smell. It also helps tremendously to flush-as-you-go-along. I hate it when I'm in a public bathroom, and the person going #2 doesn't "courtesty flush"!

Have you ever hear of Charcoal filters? The match in the bathroom works best when you blow out the flame before throwing the match in the toilet. The flame, when ignited, makes the surrounding environment rush towards it and is consumed (so to speak). When the match is extinguished the smells, because most smells are less dense than air, are the first to rush towards the burnt remains of the match and the charcoal traps some of it.
And the sulfur covers the rest of the smell.

The match does not take away the smell. It is the sulphur from the fumes after putting out the match that neutralizes the odor. This is most effective when courtesy flushes are done.

The match burns the gas. You're not just supposed to light it and blow it out for a different smell, you're supposed to move it about slowly through the room. Possibly a lighter would work-- hey, somebody try that and get back to me.

Presumably it burns the subtle methane gasses your body (and poo) releases into the air. It also puts a sharper, smokier smell into the air which people are more prone to like than the odor of fresh BMs.

It doesn't, the sulfur covers it up. They showed it on Mythbusters.
