21:18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:
21:19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;
21:20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.
21:21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

But I thought it was the word of God? Why are you allowed to pick and choose what's the word of God and what isn't?

Either all of it is the word of your God or none of it is.

Many years ago the Levitical Laws were formulated to keep a society together . It/they worked.

With no jails, social workers, or anyone else available to pamper and cojackel a son or daughter there was little choice but to stone or or even strangle a rebellious person.

This was done with the greatest of concern, not lightly.

This was the only way available ""to put evil away".

Public executions do indeed strike fear in to those who watch.

(I would not recommend it - but if THE LASH were administered to repeat offenders I do not think our prisons would be quite so full.)

Deuteronomy 21 is from the Old Testament which is a history book. Life was tough before Jesus came to earth and died for our sins. If you want to learn about today's Christians you need to look at the New Testament.

buy a NIV bible read how it words the passage then read the notes at the bottom mine says."put to the sword"means to kill.How could a merciful and just God order the destruction of entire population centers?he did this to protect his people from idol worship,which was certain to bring ruin to Isareal (20:18) in fact,because Isareal did not completely destroy these evil people as God commanded,Isarael was constantly oppressed by them and experienced greater bloodshed and destruction than if they had followed God's instruction's in the first place.we are not under that law any more Jesus came here and changed all that for us..hope this helped.if not I'm sorry I tried.

IMAO, that is quite wrong or some dumbshit eons ago messed up the translation and/or liberally inserted his/her own words/beliefs. the old testament is full of anger and is spiteful. whereas the new testament is all about love and compassion. so let's stick with the "new" and out with the "old".

Aren't you glad you're not living under Mosaic law?
You need to read this passage (and all Scripture) in context and ask yourself who the text is referring to.

As Christians, we are not required to live under Mosaic law.
