The Virgin Mary was modest and lived in modesty, covered her body, covered her hair. Did she chose to act as such, or was she oppressing herself? Who are the people today that follow such traditions? Are Muslim women oppressing themselves for choosing to act modestly and covering their hair?

Jesus wore a long beard, dressed in robes, sometimes covered his head. Who imitates him today, what cultures/religions?

Outward appearances are a start. A modest appearance encourages a person to act modestly, to think less of the materialistic world, and more about other lifes priorities. Today's western cultures encourage flaunting one's physical qualities for everyone to see. I don't think Jesus would approve of that would he?

Many of today's young educated Muslim women are covering themselves because they chose to, not because others are forcing them to. Actually, I'm all too aware of men not allowing their wifes cover. Yes, there are women that are being forced to wear burqas, oppressed in other ways. But the reality is that women all over the world are being oppressed, whether Muslim or non-Muslim. How many American women get beaten every day?

The point is that the culture of different people expect certain things. The Muslim culture expects modesty, the Western totally the opposite. Women oppression is not caused by religions, but by male dominance in most cultures.

Well I'm a believer and I'm answering. I don't see any dilemna there.
There is nothing wrong with modesty.
I don't know of any Bible scripture that describes how the women dressed, but there were certain ways to dress that were Biblical and were part of the Jewish/Hebrew culture. I think one of the arguments that the Pharisees might have had against Jesus was that he didn't look enough like a Rabbi. This guy was homeless, so he probably didn't look great all the time, and the Rabbi's probably had good clothes. Don't be like the Pharisees, and judge people by thier appearance.

But the Islamic culture oppresses women in my opinion. There are some Christian sects that are "purist" and they dress a certain way, and don't do certain things.
I suppose you are trying to make Christians look bad or something.

There's alot more to imitating Jesus than simply copying his hair and clothing styles. And as for women, most people in the West aren't getting the impression that Muslim women have a choice about wearing veils. It seems to us that women don't wear veils because they want to be modest - they wear veils because their culture and religion forces them too. And really a simple headscarf veil is not a problem. It's the burqas or the full body veils that only allow a woman's eyes to show. Mary didn't wear stuff like that.

You are assuming a lot. We have no photos. We can only assume that Mary dressed modestly, and covered her hair. We can only assume that Jesus did not shave, dressed in robes and occasionally covered his head. We must assume that he dressed in the style of the day.

These things are not addressed in Scripture...they are just what I said, assumptions.

I am a Christian, but I dress in the style of the day, with private parts of my body covered. I am freed from the law by Christ so I do not have to abide by the laws in the old testament regarding clothing etc.

You are missing the point.

Mary and Jesus both dressed in the traditional everyday clothes of the culture. There was nothing abnormal about their garb for the time.

The Bible never discusses how Mary dressed. Though modestly is never a bad thing.

sorry but the recorded appearances really mean nothing; it seems to me you are missing the whole point of Christ and the Mother of God...no offense...
