what causes the kidney to shutdown? there are some cases that the kidney is temporarily shuting down, it goes back to normal after 1 or 2 dialysis. but there are some cases that the kidney is totally shutting down. we cant say how long will the person live. it depends on the person's body, how she/he will adopt to the changes. dialysis and kidney transplant will help to prolong life. kidney transplant will make the person live like the normal person does. however, there is a lot of risk, the kidney that is transplanted should not berejected by the body. 5 years is usually the span of time the new kidney should adjust to the new body or vise versa. there are some cases the person lives a normal life with dialysis.... of course as long as you have money bec dialysis as well as kidney transplant is expensive.

Again, there is no way to tell you exactly.
It really depends on the rate of the shut down, and whether or not they go on dialysis.
