To reduce friction when the other boxers gloves makes contact with their skin. This is to help deflect the punch by letting it slides of the persons skin and to reduce burns to the face... but sometimes it's not enough and the person often ends up with a cut eyelid etc....

it helps keep the face slick so the punches are not fully absorbed - sometimes it looks like the boxer has the whole jar on his face - since the glove slides more, it helps prevent cut and it helps protect cuts that already exist

So the gloves will slide off their face and it won't cut their skin around their eyes and to also prevent sweat going into their eyes.

So they won't cut as easily. Notice when a fighter gets cut the first thing the cut man does is put grease on the cut.
