Depending on the size needed you can check with local hotels, motels (they usually have the normal size rolls in the rooms) you may be able to talk to the manager and have housekeeping save them for him.

You'd have to buy the gigantic pack they sell at either Costco or Smart & Final, Price Club, etc. and if he needs them at once, (which is obviously the case) you'd need to do so and take the time to take out the core and put the paper some place, stratigically, so you are able to use it, and it won't go to waste, otherwise you are in for a big mess, I'd put it in a big box, one after another together and on top of one another, it's your best bet, instead of asking people, and it may take a while to get, because noone really goes through that much toilet paper.
(I thought about all that)
(Janitors, hotels or whoever else you ask aren't going to take the time to look in the trash eeewww, to save them for you and then again, it would take a long time, plus they might not even remember)

It's also easier if you ask your closest family members or friends, co-worker if they start saving them for you, and it will take a while, otherwise you are better off going to Costco and you have no worries, nor depend on anyone else to get this done!!

Who chose him to bring all the materials and this, it sounds like to much for just one child!!
Teachers should be helping.

I don't know what the project is but if it only has to be tubes of a specific length, golfers use a plastic tube to keep clubs separate in their bags. I don't know the cost but you can cut them into sections.

There are a number of craft projects that use these rolls. So many, in fact, it wouldn't surprise me if a craft store like Michael's might actually stock them.

There's two ideas, hope it helps. My wife and I raised four children and everyone had something like this 4 or 5 times while they were in school.

Wish your son good luck from me.

I'd ask the teacher to send home a note to ask each child to bring in two toilet paper rolls... That way you aren't trying to supply everyone with them, and the teacher can get everyone involved with it, not just your son.
Also if only one is needed, that way maybe one kid forgets to bring his in, then you'll have an extra.

thats a little insane. you should talk to his teacher to see if the moms of the class altogether needed to buy 35-40 toilet paper rolls.

Great idea... Call an assisted living home, or adult foster care, the residents there will save you the rolls, they are with it and LOVE kids, take him to one and have him ask them to save them. I supervised a unit in an AFC, and we used TONS of tp every day.My kids came over after school, and visited with the people, they love it, they have not had little ones in a long time, it takes them back, and helping your child will help them feel useful.
