First, get together your financial records. You will need:
IRS tax return (if you filed)
bank statements
etc (see www.fafsa.ed.gov for a compleate list)

go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and apply for the government's financial aid programs. Its free and since you probably have little income you will probably get help.

Another thing you can do is go to a local college and go to their financial aid office and ask for information about grants and scholarships. They will tell you to go to the website above, but they may also give you information on scholarships specifically available to that school. Also ask for recommendations for websites to search for scholarships.

You will probably need to apply to the college before you get fineancial aid released to you, but in California it is free to apply to a community college. If there is a fee to apply, ask if it can be waived for financial need.

Note: for immediate help, in California you can also fill out a form and get your almost all fees waved because of low income. Ask if your state has a similar program.

Btw: the cheapest colleges to go to are the two year government "community colleges", which can also prepare you to transfer to a university.

Go to your financial aid counselor at the school u want to attend, and fill out forms for a Pell Grant. If you dont want to get a loan(i suggest not) then whatever is left over must be paid off at certain duer dates within the semester. I would suggest getting a job (any job) even if it is mc donalds to pay the rest off of your fees. Get with some of you classmates and you all share books when yall study. Take good not as professors usually give tests off the notes you take. Hope this helps!

Well, like the other posters said, get your taxes in order and fill out the FAFSA. There may still be time to fill out the FAFSA for the spring, you just double check on that.

Be sure to organise everything with the FAFSA and save everything.

Also, be sure to apply for every possible scholarship offered at your University-especially those pertaining to adults. Even if you do not get any at first, keep on applying, because that makes the scholarship office at your University remember your name. Hit up any clubs in your area and see if they offer scholarships as well. Go to your local library for anything you can think of with regards to applying for scholarships or grants for returning adult students.

Most of all, stay strong and work things hard. It is never to late to go back to school, honey!

Assuming you are an American, first file for divorce.

Then go to your local community college and speak to the Financial Aid Counsellor. He/she will explain the various programs and financial aid available to you based upon your personal situation, etc. Ideally you should be able to speak for you and you alone, and not have some outside interferrence from your ex... that is why I suggested clearing that hurdle first. It would not be to swift to get the aid package and have to give it back because of some action by your other half.
