Without light darkness would have no meaning. Without good bad would have no meaning. The essence of human nature, our growth and devopment make us strive for perfection and attainment through effort. The goal to see the light inside us that God put there and to perfect it to where the darkness is just that: an opposite.

from a christian viewpoint...
Jesus = Happy
Satan = Sad.
from a pagan standpoint
Jesus,
a teacher of the semetic tribes of the middle eastern lands. claimes mericles and great works of their One Ture God to be done through him.
Satan, (i should just say WHO because most pagans do not
believe in the devil but that is not your question)
the opposite of Jesus attempte to take the followers of one god and pull them to a land of punishment. possibly a fear tactic designed by the church to make people attend and pay tithes.
