He is wrecking his teeth and sucks it all day. I have tried talking to him, and he doesn't even know he is doing it. I am wondering what is the best way to get him to stop, or if he even can stop because he does it all the time, even in his sleep!

my answer is going to be abit different from all the others but in my opinion i would personally leave him for the moment. after all he is still small and its his comfort thing, some kids have teddies, some have blankets or some have a dummy. and his just happens to be his thumb. he may stop this when he starts at school but i used to be a thumb sucker until i was in my early 20's and i know someone now at 26 who still sucks her thumb. its never damaged either of our teeth.
it is hard when children have a dummy or suck their thumb for comfort because theres pressure on the parent to stop it but i bet there would be outcry if someone even suggested taking a blanket or a teddy off of a child. the comfort they get from it is the same. i feel for u though because my sons comfort is his dummy. but at 3 he is only allowed it when upset or going to sleep. maybe talk to ur son and tell him he can suck his thumb at nighttime or if he is scared or poorly as his comfort etc.

Every kid is different so its gonna be hard to just pick one. trial and error. Sometimes kids suck their thumbs as a way of expression like a self soothing method. Trying finding out if their is a hidden meaning behind or maybe its just a reflex. Some kids u just gotta leave tham alone some kids it works with medicine hot sauce etc. If those don't work wrap his thumb so its not as easy to shove in his mouth maybe by him being more aware of it he might stop. good luck. oh yeah he might move on to the other fingers so be careful. my son was a thumbsucker in the womb be he started to grow out of it but i still catch him shoving four fingers in his mouth

Who says he is wrecking his teeth? I hope not a dentist because if a dentist told you that then you need to find a new dentist. There is no way thumbsucking can "wreck" a child's teeth. His thumbsucking is a form of security for him. Leave him alone. I can see WHY he sucks his thumb though (the need for security is obvious)

I have a 4 yr old who sucks her thumb as well...I truly think that the answers given are case-by-case affective...Meaning that some kids it works, some it don't. My kid liked the hot sauce trick. Maybe make a deal with him that if he stops then you will go buy a toy that he really wants or something.

there's something you can put on kids thumbs to keep them from sucking, also helps for people who bite there nails, it tastes really gross when you do put your fingers in your mouth....I think it's called Thumb (or something spelled almost like that). Even when it dries he'll still be able to taste it if he sucks his thumb, just put it on a couple times a day...it won't hurt him to be ingesting it either. good luck.

sorry to say but you get him to stop you can try some thumb sucking prevention medicine but my cousin who is 30 use to suck his thumb all the time they used the medicine and he wouldn't suck it whenit was on there but he still sucks his thumb if he gets scared or is worried about something but only at night so he will eventually stop sucking it all the time but will still suck it at night good luck

Nothing, my 5yr old nephew sucks his two fingers and we tried everything to get him to stop, hot sauce, mustard, mayo, seasoning. we tried alot but come to think of it we never tried soap, try that every time he do it I'm gonig to do that to. We even bite his fingers, not to hard to where he'll cry but good enough to make him say "ouch".
