Both Poison Ivy and Oak are contact allergens.... so its important to wash the affected area with lots of water so that the volume of allergen decreases.
Antihistamines form the mainstay of treatment.. So Benadryl or Claritin is good and should be continued till the rash is completely healed. If these are not enough oral steroids may be required and you would need to meet your dermatologist for that.
Topical cortisone cream would help in healing. To prevent discolouration use sunscreen on that area after the wounds have dried off.

Prevention.

If you catch poison ivy, wash the affected area under cold water for 15 minutes. Then apply an anti-itch cream, preferablly calamine lotion.

I would assume poison oak is fine to do the same, but I really don't know.

Caladryl or calamine lotion is good for them just rub it over them and they should stop itching and go away...but if you want to do a home remedy...banana peels will help by rubbing them onto the sores.

Lotion called "Caladryl" (Clear) in the pharmacy section. Don't scratch and spread it around your body.

Calamine lotion helps stop the itching. You can get it at any drug store.
