Way back when, the dresses of the ladies were a complicated several layered creation. Noble ladies had special attendants (three ot more) to help them prepare for special events by assisting with their bath, fixing their hair, and dressing them (laces were such a pain). These ladies would attend them during the events to make sure all was still "presentable". Weddings were a grand event and often the bride was surrounded by many of these attendants.
Now-a-days it is considered a special honour to bestow upon a best friend or well loved female family member when a bride is about to be married.
