I have had dogs for over 30 years, and trust me...the over the counter products are all garbage. I use the liquid prescription flea control from the vet. You simply part their hair on their shoulders and squirt it on. Kills all fleas that are alive within 24 hours and also kills their eggs....and keeps working for 30 days.

I use prescription Revolution on my German shepherd, and it's great. It's a once a month treatment, and it works on heartworms, fleas, ticks, and even internal parasites. My German shepherd and I have been down in tick-infested areas of Missouri lately. . .she never had a problem, but I did. ;)
I avoid OTC sprays and repellants because they can cause serious problems in some dogs. Collies and shepherds have had bad reactions to some flea sprays and collars. If the dog is a mixed breed, there's no way of knowing whether it will react badly or not.

I work for a veterinary Hospital. Frontline for fleas and ticks, or if you just have a flea problem Advantage works best. These products cost more but either one of them will work and save you money in the long run. You get what you pay for. If you have a flea problem - you need to treat the animal, house and yard on the same day....it's best to get an exterminator for the house and yard.

During flea season I pop a galic pill down my dogs throat every day and any other time 3 x's a week. The fleas wont stick around . I have 3 big dogs and no fleas. If you prefer not giving them galic pills then you can also crush up some sage and rub in on their skin . and allow it to remain for 20 minutes then brush the remainder off.

Fleas are really a lot worse this year in Tennessee than in previous years. I use Frontline on my 2 labs and it works good for one month. It costs a lot - about $45.00. Hartz 3 in 1 Dog Spray is a lot cheaper and it works immediately and kills flea eggs too. Good Luck!...)(
