Just like people, dogs can become pregnant on the first mating, or it can take several tries. The number of matings has no effect on the number of puppies - if you're pregnant, you're pregnant.

It only takes once just like humans or could take a few tries to become pregnant but will have a small litter . If she is a small poodle she probably only will have 2 puppies but if she isnt all that small of a dog more than likely 4 with another shot. . Puppies usally come in pairs for some reason. So you can count on at least 2
and to the person who wrote that it only takes once that when a dog is pregnant they are pregnant . SO very untrue . Proof how can you explain how a female dog can have puppies from 4 or 5 different males? Being a small dog with one shot would be enough but if she is a good size dog and were to get with another male she would have more pups and would be different.

I will answer as if you know nothing about breeding, please do not be offended.
First you will need your female to be at least 2 years of age before you breed her.
People have bred them at 8 months of age, but she would still be a baby. She needs time to mature enough to handle the drain babies will put on her body.
Usually the most fertile time during breeding is between the 9th and 15th day of her heat. This is the time she will be the most receptive to the male.
If it is her first breeding, you will want to keep them in a small area. She could become scared (with the male stuck to her butt) It is also during this time that she can damage herself or the male if she trys to run away from him and drags him around a large area, personal "areas" can become damaged during the tug of war.
A normal "tie" can usually last from 15 to 45 minutes. Now you can see the need for a small breeding area.
As a personal preference I will breed my females twice during a heat, with a least 24 hours between each mating.
NOTE the female can become pregnant by MORE than one male. Do not allow her anywhere near any other males for the full 21 days (add 4 or 5 just to be safe)
That way you are assured of full-blooded puppies.
Once the breedings are complete, mark on the calander and DO NOT plan any thing between the 57 and 63 day after breeding.
Call a week prior to the expected delivery date and find out who the vet on call will be. It is always best to know where to go and who will be working if any problem should arise.
I know I answered your question to death, but I don't know how much experence you have.

It doesn't matter how many times the dogs tie, it depends on the health of the female, and the timing of the mating. My female Shih-tzu had 6 pups her 1st litter and her and the male dog only tied one time on the 13 th day of her heat. She eats a very high quality diet and the pups were all born the same size (no runts) and were all very healthy.

It depends on the dog. My cat had 7 litters of kittens. Each litter had 2 kittens. The last litter was the only one with one female.
And then other cats that I have had 7 or 8 a litter. I think it really depends on the individual animal.

One time will do it - my Lola had 8 puppies with just one mating. Breed and size plays a big part of it.

It doesn't matter about how much times. It depends on the breed and size. For instance. st.bernards are HUGE, and lots of puppies, like 10! and pomeranians are small. breed 1-3 puppies. depends on size and breed.
