I mean does one have to be intentianally decieving others in order to be deemed a liar? Or is it just telling (repeating) Lies?

An element of law to convict is you must have knowledge and intent.

Put simply....if you thought you told the truth, you are not a liar.

The short answer... I'd say no. Because the person may not have repeated it if they were aware that it was a lie.
But at the same time there must be some responsibilty given to the person.
So I think the innocence of the person is more of the question. Depending on the research and place that they got the lie from, there is some liability.
Like if they recieved the info from an unreliable source or someone else who's known to be a liar, they probably should have 'known better' or just not passed it along.
But I think to actually be called a liar, there would have to be some degree of doubt or uncertainty in what they believed as they were passing it on.

I believe according to your question, that you have told something which you were told and which you thought to be the truth; but you later found out that it was only a lie which someone had told you. You may not be a liar directly or intentionally, but I believe that you would be classified as one who spreads gossip. First of all, even if we know for certain that something that we are told is truth, we do not need to spread it any further; especially if it will only bring harm to someone's reputation. The best thing is just to be careful what you accept from others as truth. And unless it is going to be beneficial to someone, forget about it. I believe God hates gossip; even though you may of not intended to be doing such. Just pray to God to give you wisdom to be able to know when you are hearing truth and when you are hearing lies. It is very hard for people, including myself, to keep quiet sometimes. But many times we must force ourselves to do so. If you accidentally told something that turned out to be a lie, just ask for God's forgiveness; and try and be more careful next time. May God bless you.

If you repeat a lie that you thought was true, you are merely a victim of misinformation as is the listener.

If you repeat with the full knowledge its a lie obviously youre a liar.

Intentions are important.

That doesn't mean you can't severely mess things up, but when you unintentionally get something wrong, you're not a liar.

That's why I try not to hold it against people when they try to convert me, regardless of what they're trying to convert me to.

To be a liar, you have to be intentionally telling a lie. If you unintentionally tell a lie (like people claiming the world was flat back when that was "common knowledge), then you're not a liar, even though you're telling lies.

At least that's my definition.

No, you're ignorant. That said, what is truth? All things can be viewed from an infinite number of perspectives. For example, the Bible can be interpreted many ways. Who's to say which is right. Maybe that's why God said it's not man's place to judge others.

PS - is rhsaunders serious? It's not lying if you don't plan to benefit from it? Lol. If you know it's not true but say it anyway, it's a lie.

If you believed that lie to be the truth and when you repeated what you fully believed to be the truth . if you repeated it how could you be a liar. You were only stating what you thought to be the truth. Thats why you dont repeat everything you hear.

yes it has to be intentional knowledge and misrepresentation of it to be a lie. If you believe something to be true and repeat it - you are just "misinformed" - we've all been in that position - not the same as dilberate hiding or deceiving of truth as you would be doing if lying.

no a gossip possibly but you are a liar only if you find out the statement was false and you didn't correct it with the people repeated it to.
