I want to install a DVD decoder for Windows Media Player, version 10. Microsoft's site recommends 4 different decoders: CinePlayer, Intervideo, NVidea, and Cyberlink.

Here's microsoft's site, for your reference: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/plugins.aspx#DVDDecoder

I don't need lots of bells and whistles. I just need a good DVD decoder so I can play DVDs on my computer.

Any suggestions?

I like Cyberlink. Good balance of sharpness and smooth movement when used with not so state of the art video cards. The NVidea can be downloaded free I think and is pretty good. I think you can use it with other brands of video cards now as well.

PowerDVD uses and comes with the Cyberlink decoder. The decoder can be used with Windows Media Player or other software though and can probably be purchased separately.

My mistake... NVidea isn't free. You get it free if you have a NVidea video card and download the newest drivers.

I bought the CinePlayer decoder and don't use it. I use my PC for home theater and I'm picky. If you send me a message with your e-mail, I'll send it to you.

Just about any software you install that comes with a DVD decoder will allow Windows Media Player to play DVDs. PowerDVD is one example.

However, there are some free alternatives on the net. Try KMPlayer. You can get it here:

Unlike other DVD decoders, you have to use this software to play DVD's. It doesn't integrate with Media Player.

K-lite Codec Pack is the solution if you have any problem with codec. You can download it for free here http://bit.ly/1kl9u6x

If you are unable to watch video or you can't open any files (avi, mp4, divx, etc...) it's very likely that your computer doesn't have right codecs. You need to install K-lite Codec Pack to fix the issue.
