Fever is a sign that his body is fighting an infection and a temperature of 102 isn't uncommon in a one-year old. Give him plenty of liquids, tylenol (not motrin) to bring down the fever, and perhaps a cold cloth on his forehead from time to time. (motrin on an empty stomach can cause stomach upset). Popcicles or ice chips will help keep him from becom dehydrated. Our pediatrician always said not to give an tylenol until the fever got to 101, so I would say that giving tylenol to him now would be the correct course of action. Watch for other symptoms to develop but he may have been exposed to a virus or may be cutting a tooth. If the fever goes to 103 take him to the emergency room.

That really isn't a terrible fever for a 1 year old. 104 then get nervous.
Make the child cool by doing sponge baths of cool (not cold water and a little rubbing alcohol). take a bowl mix enough just to cover small cloth or even a paper towel - ring out excess - just enough to lightly moisten the skin. Don't do the face - only the neck and the forehead. make sure the baby only has a diaper on and nothing else. Do a section at a time . But don't let him get chilled either.
Also try to get plenty of cool liquids in him. Try some chilled clear juice. Be silly and try to keep him happy. Singing or humming softly is always welcome when not feeling well. It will help you too. Keep the TV off and lights down low. Not off completely.
Does the baby have a rash? He is crying without stopping? Or just uncomfortable and cranky? Wish I was there to help. This is a terrible worry, but he will be okay. Just remember the germs are being killed by the fever. Fevers are natural. It is normal for a fever to elevate at night. The body is really trying hard to kill everything now. This is the time the body does it cleaning and healing.
He'll be fine. if the fever goes up any more - you need to take him to a hospital or clinic immediately.

You can try acetaminophen (Tylenol) 30 minutes after giving the Motrin. They are metabolized differently and can be used together. A luke-warm bath can also help. When you say off and, does that mean it goes down with the Motrin, but comes back up when the Motrin wears off? According to the mayo clinic's website you should seek medical advice when an infant has a fever of 102 or higher. If you're worried, go to an urgent care center. Better to go and find out everything is OK.

If he is having other symptoms then take him to the ER - if it is just a fever all they will do in the ER is give him Motrin and Tylenol and put a cold cloth on his head. It will be more comfortable for you to do this at home. A cool bath and Motrin and Tylenol an hour and a half later then follow package directions. only a light tshirt and a light blanket and try a cool cloth on his forehead and behind his neck it should go away if he still has it on Tuesday make an appointment with his doctor. If the fever goes up then take him to ER right away

First of all, don't freak out :) It is common for children that young to have very high fevers, and 102.2 is not uncommon at all. In fact, you really should be more concerned with the reason for the fever.
Alternate giving your child motrin and tylenol. That always does a better job of getting that fever down.
Can you call your pediatrician? Mine will give you a suggestion as to whether they want you to bring the child in or to wait to come to the office.
Just watch for symptoms, tugging on ears (ear infection), runny nose and throwing up, all are pretty typical for babies.
I hope your little one feels better soon :)

This is not an emergency unless the child is sicker than he sounds. Make sure he stays hydrated--give him plenty to drink. The purpose of fever is to fight infection, so a moderate fever is not bad in itself. If he is in a lot of pain or has a lot of trouble breathing, that is another matter. If you want another method to reduce fever, here goes: gently bathe his body with a damp wash cloth, using warm water. Cold water might actually stimulate more fever. Or gently massage the body with rubbing alcohol. Both these methods can bring fever down quickly. But you are the mom and you are on the spot; you are the one to decide whether he needs emergency treatment.

I like to use the ideas of a cool down bath but not too cold, rubbing alchohol in his arm pits and maybe even behind his legs, motrin works good, every 4-6 hours. Keep heavy clothing and blankets off of him, and maybe even try a dehumidifier in the room. It could be teething or an infection, they will just do what your doing and send you home, my doctors around here don't give the babies medicine for viral infections. and if you read this how are you taking his temperature, under arms, rectal, ears, or oral. Ears and rectal are best temperature readings.

i hate military medicine, i am active duty and have been in the situatuin with my son. you rate to take your child to an emergency or acute care. if you go after hours to a military hospital, you will be directed to their emergency room which takes about 5 hours to be seen for them to tell you to yet give more motrin and come back to pcm in a few days if fever does not break, take your child to the emergency room. take a cold pack with you, make sure that you report the visit to your pcm within 24 hours. it could be as little as a little bug, but go if you are not gone already..

Might be a stomach virus. Take him to the doctor.
I put my son in luke warm water if that's the case, and Motrin, Tylenol. Ask a doctor. Maybe ear infection too. Poor baby :((

children's temperatures should never, ever be this high. your child could be suffering brain damaging effects as you read this. please take him to the emergency room immediately. i normally do not suggest emergency rooms for fevers, without having you try at least something else first, but infants and toddlers are always different stories. if Motrin or children's Advil does not help him at all (and dont give him Advil if there is already motrin in his blood stream, you will overdose him, and make it worse.) please be sure and tell the doctor or nurse on staff asking you questions that you already gave him motrin.
