Yeah, I think it depends on the consistency of the other language. For instance my husband speaks Spanish, he does not really talk to our sons much in Spanish however when his friends are over like right now, he speaks Spanish. So I think the child may try to imitate the language but it comes out in neither Spanish or English, making it seem like their speech is slightly delayed. Just my opinion anyway. Good Luck

I can say that I know a couple, who has a 3 year old little boy and he has what the professionals call "delayed speech". He has not spoken a word as of yet.

His father is Hispanic and his mother is African American, so there is spanish and english both spoken in the home. He does not talk at all, probably because he does not know which language to use.

I don't want to call him confused but he is probably trying to comprehend the languages, figure it out and then put it all together.

I am sure that when he does start to talk he will be fluent in both languages but for now, his mommy and daddy are just waiting for him to say his first word.

He is a little cutie pie also!! :D

They say that kids who are raised in a home with more than 1 language spoken do start to talk later than other kids. But when they do start to speak, they are fluent in both languages. I think America is the only country in the world where everyone speaks basically just English. It is a great thing to be multi-lingual and your child will definitely have advantages.

Well, I think that the child will not speak as early as other kids who only hear 1 language. However, once the child starts to speak, he will have an advantage. the child will speak both languages. Right on for teaching your child 2 languages.

As a teacher, I can honestly say that children are like sponges. As long as they are being exposed to positive communication they will adapt and learn to understand both languages. My very good friends speak German and English in the home, and the children often speak both alternating languages when speaking to both parents. Because they are read to, and the importance of education, reading, and writing is emphasized by their parents, they in fact are often advanced for their age.

I believe all the studies I have read say that the child will actually learn both languages and using them both will actually stimulate the brain (just like music is like a language and stimulates other parts of the brain). I hope that's true because I'm about to marry a Norwegian man and learning to speak Norwegian at my age has been tough! Just make sure you TALK TO YOUR KIDS! That's the most important thing! Good luck!

A lot of "specialists" say yes. I have 14 nieces and nephews who learned English and Spanish simultaneously from birth and none experienced any speech problems or abnormalities.

Many of my nieces and nephews exhibit thinking on a much higher level than most kids their age and I believe the bilingual upbringing contributed greatly to this.

Not only did my family prove the specialists wrong in speech but they all do very well at school.
