She is like my adopted kid, but her mouth has been getting very bad. At first just joking, I told her if she wasn't careful I would wash her mouth out. She straightened right up. Today when I threatened that she said... I would like to see you try! What do you think.

She's way too old for you to be washing her mouth with soap.

I think if you make a joke of it like if you really were going to do it, you would both get a good laugh out of the said "punishment" but you could tell her after the laughter subsides that you are earnest in the way you feel offended by the manner of her speech. I'm sure with a little laughter and some gentle firmness she may understand and respect your needs. If she can do neither than you should cut your visit short, tell her you have to leave and close the door after her. Maybe that might sink through. Good luck.

That is weird to wash out a 24 year olds mouth out with soap. I would find a different way to punish her. She is 24 years old, just tell her to grow up or get out if she wants to act that way.

I think you should go for antibacterial. Seriously, you don't want to avoid going through with things with a kid like that. They'll never take you seriously and their behavior will only escalate. Don't let anyone tell you it's abusive. Today's society has become so anal about discipline, it's no wonder teens are making bombs and shooting people.

Oh, I didn't catch that she was 24.. Kick her a** out! Let her live on her own for a while and watch her crawl back. Tough love.

She is too old for that. Just don't allow her back into the house if she continues. Ask for an apology before you let her in. Some people will never learn to apologize or change until someone shows them how. If she continues after the apology, tell her that it's gonna take a lot more to get back in again. She will have to show some major respect.

It sounds like good sitcom material, but it also sounds like an assault charge. She is an adult. If you are babysitting, or have teens in the house, you might want to let them know that behavior is not acceptable and the she can't be their poster child to point to for the use of obscenities.

I don't what she said, so I might not be as offended as you by her selection of words. Usually, the use of profanity increase with the degree of frustration a person feels in his or her everyday life. If she is venting, then let her vent. If she is just shooting the breeze, then she needs to practice on not using profanity..

I have actually threatened a complete stranger with this - an adult - when they were cursing loudly around children. The threat alone usually works, but this girl is testing you and calling your bluff - I think you should go ahead - she'll know you mean business next time you 'threaten' her.

Its considered Assault not matter what way you turn it! Case law was re-written again when the teacher was hit by a kid that threw a water balloon at him. You could be looking at some pretty stiff fines and a criminal record if you do this and this kid decides to press charges on you.

soap never did anything to teach me long term manners.

BUT you used the threat and now she is challenging you, so you might in fact have to do it just to be sure you have the upper hand here. Next time however find new ways to treat her about respect and communication
