I live in NY, and I can say it is as fashionable as you make it be. You can do everything you see in the movies however:
The aprtments are small, and look nothing like the do on Friends. You might have closets bigger than we have aparments. One Condo was sold for 1 million dollars, and it had only one bedroom and NO bathrooms. You had to share a common bathroom in the hall with your neighbor
The trendy things you see in the movies like the clubs and restaurants are there, but you better make a LOT of $$$$ to afford them.
Money is the key thing here. Most people work in the city and live in the outlying areas because of that, unless you make a 6 figure salary. Cheaper apartments do exist, but again you have a better life outside Manhattan

People are pretty fashionable. However, there is a lot of poverty in NYC. Most people, at least the ones born and raised in NYC, don't do that upscale stuff. That is pure fantasy. I never see the City's mascot on those shows - the cockroach.
However, if you are going for a trip, have the money and going to hip bars is important to you, go for it.

New York is also the creative fountainhead of United States, as far as the fashion industry is concerned, taking its inspiration from Paris and Milan. The skyline of New York looks like a curtain of diamonds as viewed from the Staten Island ferries and sightseeing helicopters. Then, the lights are a treat to watch only on the working days in New York, as the office lights are kept aglow even after the office hours for the evening cleaning crews. Holiday nights are rather ponderous.

The big apple is not what you expect. I had been there for 2 years and find NY nothing different from other cities. The New year count down was nothing exciting with all the checking points set up by the police. One thing very true is that you got to be rich to go into bars, high-end dining and fashion.....

I have been to NYC twice. I think it's a fashionable city. I could immediately see that there was more style there as soon as I stepped in. Everybody will have a different view of things, but I see NYC as a very classy and sophisticated city. I think it is a lot of fun.

There is some of that, but there's also alot of business and commerce, as well as a lot of homelessness and red-light districts. Not everyone is very fashionable, you will notice that the streets are crowded with average looking people and many tourists.
I would highly recommend going there to visit if you ever get the chance!

visiting Manhattan is one of the best things I've done in my life, twice,
Manhattan is safer for tourists from Metropolitan and Nature Museums to the south... I've never had troubles in that zone...
Times Squares is the center of the world, it's great for all tastes, all kind of restaurants, glamour in the great urban landscape, for all budgets....
The sight you see on the movies is not as much as when you stop in the middle of the steet in front of the MArriot Marquis and delight the great atmosphere is surrounding you...
I love Manhattan, but as any other big city in the world, it have homeless, junkie people. I'd love to move there to work somewhere about internet industry....
HAve a nice trip. Check www. visitnyc.com for more info..
Honestly...

LOL, There is NOTHING LIKE NYC IN THE WORLD, other city's try to be like it but, they can't. NYC moves faster than the speed of light, it's not trying to be anything else but, "NEW YORK", You'll work hard but, you'll play hard too, it's a blast, so much to do, and you can do it at ANY hour, NYC never shuts down, ever !

Yes, but to live the fabulous life you see in the movies, television shows etc-- you will need about 10000 dollars of disposable cash a day-- I am living here now, and in graduate school-- yeah, not so glamorous
