There are several good answers here, Pride Fighting has been a major focus in Japan along with K-1, it is much older than the UFC, and several of the fighters that competed in the PRIDE and K-1 also transition to UFC more than likely because of the recognition and exposure or winnings (money) and possible sponsorships.
PRIDE Fighting is one of the oldest if not the largest MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) competitions in the world; It has nothing to do with the gay/lesbian community (although they have a designated national week for it's celebration: Gay/Lesbian/Trans Gendered Pride Week) and the celebration of their sexual orientation, again someone didn't read the question fully, or has never heard of the term, and mistakenly interjected an uninformed opinion.)
Wanderlai (verbalized Van-der-lay) Silva I believe had started in the UFC and then left for the PRIDE and K-1 circuits to better himself, he has recently returned and is now openly challenging Chuck "Iceman" Liddell for the Heavyweight title.
I hope this helps your answer, and check search engines for web links to better find out about top fighters and info on the K-1 and PRIDE Fighting competition circuits

Pride is the largest mixed martial arts organization in the world, started when the ufc was going bankrupt before the Fertita's and Dana White took over.
Pride has some great fighters in their organization, several of their most popular and successful fighters such as Dan Henderson, Josh Barnett, Wanderlai Silva, and Vitor Belfort, and Mark Coleman, Phil Baroni and a few others.
PRIDE has really great fighters and has the best heavyweights in the world (Fedor Emelianenko, Mirko Cro Cop).
I think Pride has the more better fighters, but the UFC fighters that are good such as Chuck Liddell and Matt Hughes can beat any Pride Fighter.

Pride is NOT older than UFC, but it is bigger because UFC was nearly bankrupt when Pride took off in 1997. Pride, based in Japan, has some amazing fighters. Nogueira (both of them), Fedor Emelianenko, Wanderlei Silva, and Mirko Crocop stand out. They have a wider audience and therefore pull fighters from more of the world, so they basically have _more_ great fighters, not necessarily better fighters. Guess we'll see what happens when Chuck Liddell fights Silva next month.
