If he's housebroken and can be trusted not to eat the furniture, let him sleep where he wants.

He should sleep in his cage (you may need to put some of your stuff in there so he can sense your presence). Two reasons for this is: 1. Dogs are social, group animals whose ancestors lived in caves, holes in ground, etc. so are more secure in a "close" environment like a cage (assuming it's not too small for him);
2. When you are away from home, putting him in the cage will help him feel more secure in your absence and keep him out of possible danger/trouble.

Of course, if you are letting him sleep in your bed, then he will definitely prefer that to his cage. You have to train him.

CAUTION: Make sure his cage is the proper size.

Having the dog sleep in a proper sized cage will ensure that he abides by his housebreaking. A dog's natural tendency is not to have an "accident" in his bed...provided the crate isn't so big that he can sleep in one end and use the other as a bathroom (a lot of people make this mistake). Put him in the crate about an hour before you are ready to go to bed. Turn out the light in his room, stay out of his sight but within earshot. If he fusses, say "NO!...Go to bed!" emphatically. Do not lose your nerve part-way through the process... When you have turned in, if he continues to fuss, repeat the commands so he understands that you mean it... In the alternative, place a radio near his crate and play a station with talk show or soothing music.

He may feel neglected at night when he is in his cage. My dog broke out of it twice because she thought she would be abandoned. Try putting on soft music to calm your dog down and let him get used to his kennel. You may want to stay by the cage to calm him down til he falls asleep. Each night gradually leave his cage earlier while he is lying there.
Do you use the cage as punishment for your dog? If you do the dog may think he is in trouble.

Good luck!

I would say that if he's house broken then let him out of the cage but if he isn't then he needs to keep sleeping in the cage until he is.

Well, does he want to sleep in your cage instead???
Would you want to sleep in his cage???
If you don't respect his opinion, he will bark, poop and piss all over his cage.
Let him free, if you don't want him in your house, someone else will.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

why don't you find him a box or a basket lined with old towel instead of a cage for your dog to sleep in, a dog house is also good alternative, but box / basket or simply a rug is cheaper.
I understand that you need to set discipline to your dog, but your god hates containtment.
