pennies should be easy they are copper.
but i think the secret would be to clamp it tightly and put a piece of scrap wood under neath the coin(clamp it with the coin)

with a drill, put the coin in a vice and use the right size drill and BAM, you got a hole in your coin.

I think that what happens is the mints have special coin molds that create that hole in the first place for the blanks. Then the blanks are struck with the coin design, one that has been specifically designed to accommodate the hole.

Go to the hole store and get a half dozen small holes. Take them home and then just stick them to the coins.
