I went to Wal-greens the other night and a guy was outside going to everybody's car asking for gas money. He practically stuck his head in my car door as I was getting out. My boyfriend went by the same Walgreens that night and said the same guy approached him too. Two weeks before that I was approached inside a grocery store while buying groceries and a 50-60 year old man asked for money. I believe in helping people but it shouldn't be this way. They need another place to go for help. What can be done about this issue? It is getting to the point I don't even like to go to a gas station at night anymore because of the people that hang around in the parking lot.

You must live in Orlando!!!
Begging is a very lucrative career. Tax free income.
If they can hit twenty people in an hour for a buck a piece, they are making darm good money.
They are really bad where I live. I see them in groups at intersections, with buckets begging for money. They claim to be with some church, but I don't believe it.
I even had a conversation with some old lady in wal mart, we talked for about ten minutes, she left a nd went to pay for something, then came back to me and asked if I had fifty cents, cause she didn't have enough money. Of course, all I had was a dollar, she didn't bring me any change. The bum. she knew she didn't have enough money, and she only struck up a conversation because I look like a nice guy. The bum.
What can we do about it? Get rid of the damn illegal mexicans, and give these bums work in the fields!!!!!

There have been a number of published stories about how some of the "homeless" people make far more than your average fast-food worker. In the case of one well known New York pan handler, he made enough to go to Florida every winter where he has a condo. It turns out he paid cash for the condo as well.

Obviously he is the exception rather than the rule. When approached at the grocery I always ask what they need inside. If they say food I get them food, if they say wine, I get them wine. However, if they ask for cash, I ask them to get away from me.

look at the numbers. Poverty is up under Republicans. Just like it went up under Reagan. I donate to the local food pantry, the kids need food. Money given out to anyone on the streets most likely goes to drugs or beer and wine. We also have a higher prison population under Republicans. Check with your local food pantry and ask them how the burden has become far, far worse in the past 6 years. One reason many are living in poverty is that Republicans refuse to increase the minimum wage, 5 States have it over $8. The federal poverty lever for a family of four is on my blog. About 22 million live on $5.15 per hour, most are adults.

Its a compex problem, I wouldnt really feel comfortable commenting on it generally without knowing more about it. Really all I know is my experiences, but if the guy stuck his head in your window or got rude with you dont give him anything. There was this guy that used to hang out in my neighborhood begging for change. The one time I gave him some change he started talking about god and how the white man is the devil, which I took really personally because Im black and white. He tried that **** for a while and I had to get rude with him to get him to leave.

That is just a side effect of the republican agenda. If our government won't do anything to stop the loss of our good paying jobs and continue to refuse to raise the minimum wage how are you going to eat? At least the guy was begging instead of stealing.

Use your head. Some want money to buy Two Buck Chuck. Others may be collecting for al-Qaeda. If you want to help the needy, donate to a recognized charity.

Sadly enough, this is America today. Most federal and state social program funding has been cut cuz we need to pay for an unnecessary war. Don't be afraid of these people......we don't know how they got this way, but it's not our place to judge on that one........just help when you can. It becomes easier when I remember scripture, "Whatever you do unto the least of mine, you do unto me".

They have stopped doing it here in San Diego, ever since Target chased off the girl scouts. Now the only thing I see out in front of stores are signs saying please do not give money to solicitors.
