I feel people change because they were never really their true selves before the marriage. A game - life can be such a game. If only we were ourselves all the time there would be no surprises - especially bad ones.

Because they are not satisfied with their station in life. Perhaps marriage is more work than the are willing to put into it. Although some people do change for the worse as you stated there are just as many people that change for the better.

because they start taking the relationship and each other for granted. They see marriage as the end-point instead of a beginning. You just dont settle in and give up when you get married, its the start of a life long partnership of up and downs and learning to compromise when you really dont want to. People had difficulty merging into a team and letting go of their selfish ways...this is why marriages dont work....because we dont want to do the work that it takes

Marriage is like taking off your tie after church. Getting to the church you look like the complete package, after you are married BOTH people start to show their character flaws. Trust me no one is the complete package, so enjoy those little character flaws that make your special loved one unique.

Because they think that wedding means marriage. Marriage is for grown up's and too many "children" get married.

I honestly think it's because people don't always act like their true selves when they are courting. Both men and women do really sweet things like buy flowers and gifts to get the person but as soon as you're married their true selves come out.

because people change and grow their whole life, some for better/worse. gee, it's in the vows, why wouldn't you expect it. also, people tend to be on there best behavior when dating and tend to relax when it comes to everyday life.

Because once the wedding is over, they think they don't have to try anymore. So they stop putting their best foot forward, because they feel that the race is over, not realizing that there's longer, more difficult races ahead.

I have a rule that works well. If you want to know how someone will treat you if you marry them, watch carefully how they treat their parents or whoever they have been living with. I've never seen where that didn't reveal who they really are.
