No, it's not frosting. It's just a creamy dessert, kind of like a pudding.
I'm a very good cook, but I still like to use the boxed cake mixes. They are good and so easy. You don't have to drag out all the flour and baking powder and stuff.
In my opinion, the icing (frosting) is really what makes the cake.
Do you have a favorite frosting. Maybe we could find you a good recipe for that.
Here's a cake that I do make from scratch that is interesting and very good.
Nice and moist.
FRUIT COCKTAIL CAKE
Stir together in a large bowl:
2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
Add:
2 eggs, beaten
1 can fruit cocktail, including juice
Mix well with an electric mixer or with a wooden spoon.
Pour into a greased and floured 9"x13" pan. Sprinkle some brown sugar on top of batter. Bake 35-45 minutes.
Leave cake in pan and pour topping over hot cake.
TOPPING
1 cup evaporated milk
1 cup sugar
1 stick (1/2cup) butter
Bring to a boil and cook, stirring constantly, until it thickens. This might take as long as 15 to 20 minutes. Add 1 teaspoon VANILLA. Pour over hot cake.
Optional: you can add 1 cup flaked coconut to the topping.
Open you'll give this a try.

No, it's not a frosting it's a jello type dessert. It sounds pretty good too!
I do not know of any sites that use premixed (box) cakes mixes but, did you try the www.foodtv.com ? Try looking under the show Semi Homemade.

hmmm interesting. i would say its a frosting. i would probally make it , try it out on the cake - plain vanilla cake and maybe used as a bagel spread too ??? cake would definately have to be kept in fridge because of the cream cheese. but doesnt sound too bad.

It's a molded dessert, apparently.
I bet it would be good spread over a storebought or a homemade baked graham cracker crust, too.

They don't mention frosting, and I don't think it is. But it sounds great if you try it on some cake!
