Windows XP Home Edition is an operating system
Microsoft Office XP is a set of user programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook.....
Windows XP Professional Edition is also an operating system. Microsoft configured it differently, so you could PAY more. But the special Domain networking features really will work with Windows XP Home Edition at half the price. (but you won't see those words "I PAID WAY TOO MUCH FOR THIS" during startup).

I think you are confusing two different products. Windows XP Home edition is the operating system installed on many home computers. This is what allows you to do all things with your computer (click the mouse, run applications, copy files, access the Internet, etc.).
Microsoft Office is a group of applications that includes Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheet), Outlook (e-mail and calendar), PowerPoint (slide shows, etc.), Access (database), and others.

Home is just the basic programs for any run-of-the-mill computer. Good for people who don't do a lot of work at home. Office has nice programs such as Powerpoint for those who do an extensive amount of work off their computer.
