One way of putting the awareness out there on Down Syndrome is through the media. I had a non-profit organization called
"A.D.A.Y." that I started up several years back. It was helping youths with alcohol, drugs and abuse problems. I called the local newspaper office and asked if they could help me put a story out on my new program. After I explained to them what it was about they did a story on it...with a follow up on it a few months later. I would give the local newspaper a try and see what they can do for you. The radio station is another place you might try. If you haven't done it already a web site on "Awareness on Down Syndrome." may be very beneficial. You may also think about doing up pamphlets and putting them in people's mailboxes, stores, etc. I hope that this bit of information helps you. I wish you the very best of luck!

I will be participating with my family in our local Buddy Walk as well. Here are some ideas you might consider.

The National Association for Down Syndrome has lovely little bookmarks you can purchase (100 for $10). You can ask to put them in your local library, bookstores, schools, churches, etc. It's a relatively inexpensive way to reach a lot of people. The website is http://www.nads.org/pages_new/product_pages/bookmarks.html

Have children in a local school make posters about the walk and DS awareness and post them around town...stores, coffee shops, etc.

Of course, T-shirts, bracelets and pins are a great way to advertise.

Call your local news stations (radio and TV) and ask if they would do a public service announcement to draw attention to the walk.

Since October is Down syndrome Awareness month, just do as much as you can to get the word out there that our kids are wonderful, loving, bright kids who enrich our families and those around us everyday. Maybe one day people will finally realize that our kids are pretty much like anyone else, they just need a little extra time to do some things, but the love and spirit they demonstrate is better than anything else we can imagine!!!

Good luck on the walk!

There would be an assosication out there that deals with Down Syndrome, get in touch with them and see if they want to participate aswell. They can organise gifts made by people with down syndrome which you could sell and raise money for them. Thats if its what you wanted to do. Attatch a fact sheet to the gifts aswell. My little sister inlaw has it they are the most beautiful kids.
