I was told by my employer that I would be let go if I was taking psychotropics because of federal law that prohibits Truck drivers from using them. Since I would become homeless immediately I can't take the chance of getting the help I think I need.

i honestly think it is best to avoid therapy for a while because it uncovers a lot of issues and makes you feel worse initially, so you should be on the right medication first.

but if you cant take meds, there ARE other things you can do.

melatonin helps on the days when you cant sleep. take a couple to get to sleep. (its in the vitamin section of the store)

also take 3 - 6 grams of omega 3 fatty acids per day. falxseed oil or fish oil are great supplements for this.

even though you will feel an unrelenting urge to stay awake and get things done or talk online or whatever, don't miss your sleep.
the sleep cycle is super important especially if you have bipolar disorder.

it just takes some self control, practice and will power.

and if these techniques fail, find a different job.

your health and your life are more important.... and there are plenty of jobs you can do while on psychotropics.

Many Bipolar patients I have met aren't even successfully treated with meds. The meds just seem to make their affect flat, attitude passive, and they are so drowsy they can longer exhibit mania, only depression.
I'm a big advocate of psychotherapy, not medication. I believe that therapy and social support can treat Bipolar more than meds, so perhaps you should try that alone and see how you do. Good luck!

I would check on that if I were you, it is against the law to fire for a disability like bipolar. people can drive on lithium. I think it is only benzos that truck drivers can't use. I would check on that, don't take his wword for it. The only vitamin I have ever heard of for bipolar is called empowerplus from www.truehope.com don't know if it works though

Yes, it can be controlled with lithium, a heavy metal ion that is missing in the body of bi-polar sufferers. This is in fact the treatment of choice.

I would ask your doctor about this. It is imperative to let your company know if you are taking medicine that impairs your driving ability. I had to do that and was sidelined while I was taking prescription pain relief.
The medicine you are talking about should not impair your driving ability.
