My car stereo only works when the driver side door is open. It is a 98 honda civic. I would like to know if it is fixable my-self or should I leave it to the professional. Any tips on how to fix it my-self

Hello,

Idea 1:
On most cars you can turn on the dome lights manually. Try out if it fixes your problem.

Idea 2:
I assume you have the speaker in the driver's door.
Maybe the wires of this speaker are broken and when you close the door, the wires are shorting and the head unit goes to emergency-state to protect the output stages from overloading(turning off can be a strategy). From what you said, turns out, that the speaker in the driver's door never works, so it might be also defective. When the door is open, the wires are just broken, but they do not contact, that's why the head unit stays alive. To make everything sure, disconnect the cables that go to the driver's door and turn it on. When it no longer turns off after colsing the door, then check to see if the wiring or the speaker is the problem.

I hope this helps.

Regards

is it factory? If it is take it to a shop, that's bizarre.

If it's and aftermarket stereo someone made a mistake and powered the head unit off the pin switch for the dome light.
To fix this you would have to pull the head unit find the two hot wires from the deck, One switched and one constant hot, usually yellow and red. You would then have to find a new constant hot and/or a new switched hot depending on which one was connected to the door pin switch.

Sounds to me like you have a bad ground or a short. If you are inexperienced, leave it to an audio pro or dealership to repair. Good luck!
