In Japan the word sushi means "with rice". In America sushi is often misunderstood to mean raw fish, but the primary ingredient of sushi is vinegared rice, and can even be all vegetable.
Sushi toppings or fillings can include seafood, meat, vegetables, mushrooms or egg. Sushi toppings may be raw, cooked, or marinated.
There are various types of sushi:
Sushi served rolled in nori (seaweed) is called MAKI (rolls).
Sushi made with toppings laid onto hand-formed clumps of rice is called NIGIRI.
Sushi made with toppings stuffed into a small pouch of fried tofu is called INARI
Sushi made with toppings served scattered over a bowl of sushi rice are called CHIRASHI-ZUSHI.

I don't mean to put a damper on everyone but ,
If you want to eat sushi , go to Japan.
So many people around the world say "oh yeah , I like sushi" but the "so called Sushi" that they like is made to taste for the people of that area , It IS NOT traditional sushi.
The fish has to be ultra fresh , and because if it is shipped , it isn't fresh anymore so to have Japanese sushi , you have to go there. Sushi produced in any other country is "Mock Sushi" NOT THE REAL DEAL.(99% of the time it also isn't a Japanese chef preparing it either)
The only way to have traditional sushi is JAPAN where the sushi chef's have spent a lifetime perfecting the art of making it.

"sushi" is the easiest to enjoy. you know, stuff like california rolls. Sashimi is what turns most people off. this is the typical "sushi" one thinks of. the ball of rize topped with a raw piece of fish or whatever. I personally love the stuff. could eat it 24/7. but some of the odd ones like the eel and octopus take some people awhile to get used to or even like. I'd suggest you start of calfornia rolls first, then upgrade to sashimi. I actually hate california rolls so go figure

It tastes how the ocean smells. A little fishy, and a lot seaweedy. If you have the type which is mostly rice and kelp, the fish part of it really isn't as overwhelming as might think, it just adds flavor.
I have to admit, I've never tried the more exotic stuff, like octopus, so I can't begin to tell you about that.

Soft fishy granular salty soy smacking gluttonous canine teeth clicking almost vaginally anamalesque piquancy and flavour wrapped in seaweed draped in raw primitive life forms.
The Japanese beer goes well too.
