They may make the dog sleepy. There is also a possibility that the dog may have an upset stomach or loose bowels. In extreme cases, the dog may have an allergic reaction which manifests as muzzle rubbing, scratching, and difficulty breathing; however this is very rare.
Usually, those are the only side effects of a prescribed pain med, but if there is any bleeding, bloating, or signs of allergic reaction, take the dog to the vet right away.

Be careful with ANY sort of medication you give your dog, even if it's been prescribed by your veterinarian.
Pain relievers--especially prescription meds-- can have a mild sedative effect on dogs, just as they do for humans. The problem is, they also produce a "hangover" after the medication wears off. After the mild sedation, your dog may become (hours later) somewhat "hyper", or agitated.
As long as the medication isn't used for too long (a week should be plenty), and you use it only when necessary, your dog won't have any lasting side effects.

The only pain pills I've given my dog is Rimadyl (spay, hip surgery, mange), and there are absolutely no side effects.

What meds are they? If they are used short term then there are no side affects. If they are used on a regular basis there is also a risk liver/kidney damage. But that is if the dog is on them for YEARS and no bloodwork is never run

It depends on what's been perscribed. NSAID like Previcox, Rimadyl, Metacam usually ahve very little side affects. Tramadol, or Acepromazine can cause lathargy. All of these meds can cause vomiting.
